Betty Stanfield talks about growing up on a small farm near Prescott, Iowa and contracting polio in 1940 when she was 13 years old. She was cared for by her mother in the family home without electricity and was able to return to school after a month although the disease left her legs permanently weak, a condition which kept her from working at jobs requiring a lot of standing.
